Chris "Ashton" Kutcher and Steve Jobs: Speeches that Move Me

I honestly have never really been an Apple / MAC person. At least not until the ground-breaking iPhone came to life. I was so amazed with the technology (and quite frankly because I can be so mainstream haha) But I did believe in the product. There's no denying that it it's own way, it changed the world of smart phones.

And sadly, it wasn't until he passed away 2 years ago that I got to find out about his legacy in life which really gave me goosebumps. One of his quotes that really hit me every time I complain about my work was during his commencement speech at Stanford University:

Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it.

And with that simple speech, one could not stop but admire the way he thinks and the way he approached his life. And as this simple quote gave me goosebumps, I'm sure Mr. Ashton Kutcher, who was perfectly casted as Steve Jobs in the movie Job, gained even more inspiration.

And so I've been seeing a lot of links admiring Ashton's speech during the Teen Choice Awards this year and so I finally got the time to sit and watch it. And again, just like that, goosebumps. This guy is not only undoubtedly charismatic and super cute, but really smart and generous as well. He generously shared with everyone some details in his personal life, how he got to where he is, and how proud he is of how he came to be. And of course, a huge part of his speech was to share what he has learned from the great Steve Jobs.
Ashton's Speech that I tried my best to transcribe:

“First of all, I don’t have a career without you guys. I don’t get to do any of the things that I get to do without you.

“You know I thought it might be interesting… you know… in Hollywood, in the industry, there’s a lot of like insider secrets to keeping your career going and a lot of insider secrets to making things tick. And I feel like a fraud. My name is actually not even Ashton. Ashton is my middle name. My first name is Chris. And it always has been. It got changed when I was like 19 and I became an actor.

“But there are some really amazing things that I learned when I was “Chris”.  And I wanted to share those things with you guys because I think it’s helped me be here today.

“So, it’s really 3 things: The first thing is about opportunity. The second thing is about being sexy. And the third thing is about living life.

“So first, Opportunity… I believe that Opportunity looks a lot like hard work. When I was 13 at my first job when my dad carrying shingles up to the roof, and then I got a job washing dishes at a restaurant, and then I got a job at a grocery store deli. And then I got a job at a factory sweeping Cheerio dusts off the ground. And I’ve never had a job in my life that I was better than. I was just always lucky to have a job. And every job I had was a stepping stone to my next job and I never quit my job until I had my next job. And so opportunities look a lot like work.

“Number 2: Being Sexy. The sexiest thing in the entire world is being really smart….

and being thoughtful…

and being generous…

….Everything else is CRAP. I promise you! It’s just crap that people try to sell to you to make you feel like less. So don’t buy it! Be smart. Be thoughtful. And be generous.

“The third thing, is something that I just really learned when I was making this movie about Steve Jobs. And Steve Jobs said: When you grow up, you tend to get told that the world is the way that it is. And that your life is to live your life inside the world and try not to get in too much trouble, and maybe get an education and get a job, and make some money, and have a family. But life can be a lot broader than that when you realize one simple thing. And that is that everyone around us that we call life was made up by people that are no smarter than you. And you can build your own thing. You can build your own life that other people can live in. So build a life. Don’t live one. Build one. Find your opportunity, and always be sexy. I love you guys!

-Chris "Ashton" Kutcher

It's such a relief that amidst all of the Hollywood stars that seem to be giving in to bad influences, there are still a lot like Ashton who strives to inspire other people, especially teens. I loved how he made the time and effort to give a moving speech about work, about self confidence, about loving yourself, and about loving life. He could have simply said "Thank you! you guys rock! i love you all!" but he did mo than that. He wasn't even holding a paper with his speech on it. (Teleprompter? I don't think so too). It think it was just a genuine and sincere speech that is geared towards today's teens to help them make the right choices in life.

I hope more actors will be like him (and I hope he will stay that way too) so that our kids will have more actors to look up to. Just saying.

You can watch the speech here:

  1. Wow! That made me stop and reflect too. It hit me right on the spot. Even if I have my life now, have a family and in my 30's, I still have to be reminded that we make our life and not because it has to be this way. we can make a difference

    1. Amen! :-) Still lots ahead of us! :-) let's make the best of it! :-)
